One day, one group.
Touch the roots — and leave, the next morning, in a body subtly changed.

The room
Solid-wood furniture, Kameda-jima fabric,
a Shigaraki-ware bath, tatami of rush grass.
In every texture underfoot, in the scent of wood, in all you touch,
lives the work of this land’s hands.
Not merely quiet.
In the window, the fields of Shibata; in your ears, only wind and birdsong. Earthen walls soften the light and sound of the outside, while solid wood and gentle lighting ease the view.
Sight, sound, material, light — all make a deep immersion. Away from information, a tightened mind unwinds.
In the afterglow of dinner, open a book, brew tea,
and have more idle time than you know what to do with. That is the luxury here.

You may be surprised by how deeply you sleep.
After dinner, dim the lights and close the day in the deep dark held by earthen walls. A night without television or notifications brings a sleep deeper than you expect.
You wake naturally to soft morning light;
walk the fields, amid birdsong and the scent of earth.
The shift from night to morning is, itself, the reason to stay.

A retreat for watching the seasons.
Spring’s flooded paddies, summer green, autumn rice, a field of winter snow. Sit by the window, and the Shibata of that season quietly opens before you.
One group a day — so the view is yours alone. Simply gazing beyond the window is, above all, the luxury here.
Spring — The paddies fill with water, a mirror that holds the sky and the light. In the hills the first wild greens appear, and the land’s awakening reaches the plate.
Summer — Green as far as the eye can see. Mornings are cool; at night only the sound of insects remains. Beyond the window, the paddies deepen day by day.
Autumn — The ears of rice ripen and bow, gold-headed. The harvest’s bounty — and the ingredients preserved against the coming winter — give the course its depth.
Winter — Snow quietly closes the land. Everything sinks into white, and only the lamplight remains. This season, when the arts of preservation come into their own, is the time Né can speak to most fully. Snow without; the warmth of earthen walls and timber within — a night that can be spent nowhere else.

Before dinner
The quiet hours after check-in.
Ease into the private area of the adjacent barrel sauna sui, and come to the table with your senses cleared.

The barrel sauna “sui”
On the same grounds stands the barrel sauna “sui” — a quiet space to reset, for staying guests.
Wood-fired, reaching about 110°C, cooled with soft well water at around 15°C, surrounded by the 3,200-tsubo grounds and its trees, with a timber deck you can cross barefoot.
Enjoy it in the evening, or in the clear air of the morning.
